We all have times when we don’t always listen well when others are speaking. Our thoughts may wander onto another topic, such as an urgent appointment, pressing personal issues, or where to go for lunch. If you really want to make a difference in the world, then learning to listen well is one of the keys, and listening well means ‘listening actively’. Active listening shows interest in both the speaker and what’s being said. This puts the speaker at ease and encourages them to continue and to elaborate. Active listening also clarifies what’s been said. It goes beyond the ‘data’ to the rich core of values, beliefs, thoughts and assumptions that actually determine how we use and hear the ‘facts’.

Listening is an excerpt from p. 139 of One World AtLast – a manifesto for the modern revolution written by Fabian Dattner
